The calendar

The Calendar is one of the most fascinating features of Books of Hours. Calendars generally precede the Offices.
They provide illuminators with an opportunity to depict the labours of the Months of the year.
The Calendar of the Torriani Book of Hours is adorned with twelve delightful illustrations surmounted by a sign of the Zodiac, with, portrayed in the frame for the field of script, the labour of the month

With meticulous care and attention to detail, the illuminator manages to create charming scenes inspired by day-to-day life and occupations.
These scenes confirm that the codex is from Milan: among the illustrations we find the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Milan’s old cathedral; also included is a statue of Saint Ambrose (the Patron Saint of Milan).
